The dark sheep of the second album, most of the parts to Afterglow were written on an acoustic guitar while Miles was babysitting. The following day he brought the song to rehearsal and, after only a couple run-throughs, decided it was complete. Outside of the demo recording from rehearsal and the final version Afterglow has only been performed once, at an acoustic virtual show.
Afterglow is a tune about wanting to break out of complacency. The narrator describes someone who takes the safe and easy road, avoiding risks so that even when he “drops the ball”, it only bounces and he has little consequence to face. But living like this has taken its toll, and it is time to face the fact that you can’t avoid making mistakes, and that making them won’t be the end of the world. “Shun the flash and be the afterglow” is the advice to focus on the long term goal, not the short term.
